Sailfish/Marlin
Billfishing’s sportfishermen expend a lot of time and effort honing their craft when it comes to pursuing trophy, world-class Sailfish and Marlin species. The Pacific Sailfish or “Pez Vela”, (Spanish word), is the most unique of the billfish family with an extended height at the center of the dorsal fin, having both light and dark blue spots set into the rich blue/bronze colored back and sides, slim/compact body, and a most identifiable long bill/lengthy-high sail like dorsal fin. A highly rewarding technique of trolling artificial skirted plastic squid or live bait rigs is employed to tease excited sails. Sailfish are known for their “tail walking” antics, phenomenal acrobatic aerial shows, ablility to attain speeds of 60+ mph., and engage in blistering fast runs once the seasoned charter boat angler sets the hook. The Pacific specimen ranges from Peru in South America, along the Central American coastline to Baja California, then westward from Hawaii to Australia, yet migrating concentrations are found and encountered by catch & release sportfishermen in Mexico’s Baja, Panama, Costa Rica, and Guatemala. Guatemala having recently achieved the reputation internationally, as the Sailfish capitol of the World, because of the natural underwater coastline, which forms a bay with strong currents coming from west to east from the Mexican coast then turning back after hitting the coast of El Salvador, and creates enormous, natural occurring eddy, rich in bait and pelagic fish where Pacific Sailfish, Marlin and other large game fish habitat. Our numerous experienced and tournament clientele have not only preferred but somewhat insist upon returning to our Guatemalan resorts, as their prime destination when annually targeting their Trophy-sized Sailfish. Big Game: Billfishing has another family of closely related bluewater gamefish comprised of the Marlin group of Black, White, Striped, and Blue species.
Teasers of the bright color spectrum and live ballyhoo styled presentations are towed behind cruise boats to draw these big gamefish. The Blue Marlin frequent Mexico’s Cabo- Sea of Cortez, Guatemala’s Iztapa area, and voyage seasonally dwelling from Costa Rica’s Gulf of Dulce(Golfito) to northward along the coast into Quepos/Tamarindo. The Striped Marlin will blindly strike an artificial teaser arrangement whenever properly enticed into battle by any Marlin aficionado. Striped Marlin commonly can be seen on the water’s top surfaces sunning themselves in a relaxed state and can be distracted into attacking with a circled pass of a tempting live bait. The size and fighting abilities of World-class, Trophy Blue and Striped Marlin are known to draw upon the repeated seasonal adventures, and Lifetime Dream come-true Experiences for many a trophy marlin angler.
